Batch 2 Update — Where We Are Right Now

Batch 2 Update — Where We Are Right Now

When we shipped Batch 1 to our 433 Kickstarter backers, we learned just how much goes into building a hardware product from scratch. Every sensor sourced, every PCB tested, every aluminium shell machined. Batch 2 has been that process all over again — but faster, sharper, and informed by everything we got right (and wrong) the first time around.

Here's exactly where things stand.

What's done

The short answer: most of it.

Electronics — all three circuit boards (top, bottom, and dock) have been fabricated, assembled, tested, and shipped to our assembly location. Component sourcing for Batch 2 went smoother than Batch 1 — we'd already qualified every part, so lead times were predictable.

Aluminium — the shells have been extruded, CNC machined, and anodised. If you've held an ambient one, you know the feel of the aluminium body is one of our favourite things about it. Every unit goes through the same process: raw aluminium bar → tool extrusion → precision CNC machining → anodising. It's not the cheapest way to make a case, but it's the right one.

Plastics — internal plastic parts have been injection moulded, painted, and paired with 3D-printed components. These are the parts you don't see — the internal structure that holds the sensors in place and manages airflow through the device.

Parts sourcing — sensors, batteries, glass covers, cables, screws, accessories, and packaging materials — all sourced and received. Swiss-made sensors are the heart of ambient one, and they're ready to go.

What's happening now

Certification — ambient one is currently being tested for regulatory certification. This is non-negotiable for any electronic product, and we're working through it now.

Assembly line — the line is set up and tested. Electronics subassembly is done. Next up: internal plastics subassembly, firmware flashing and device registration, unit assembly, and packaging. This is the part where hundreds of individual components become the device you'll unbox.

What's left

Once assembly is complete, every unit goes through functional testing and a cosmetic inspection before final QA sign-off. We don't ship anything we wouldn't want to use ourselves.

After that: dispatch. Fulfilment planning is already done — we're ready to get Batch 2 out the door as soon as the last unit passes QA.

What we improved from Batch 1

Batch 1 was our first time manufacturing ambient one at scale. We learned a lot:

  • Tighter tolerances on the aluminium machining mean a more consistent fit between the shell and internal components
  • Refined the assembly sequence to reduce build time per unit without cutting corners
  • Better packaging to protect the glass cover and anodised finish during shipping

Batch 2 units are the same ambient one — same sensors, same capabilities, same build quality — but with the benefit of everything we learned shipping 400+ units to backers around the world.

Follow along

We'll keep posting updates as we move through assembly and QA. You can track the full production roadmap on our Roadmap page — every milestone is marked as it's completed.

If you haven't reserved yours yet, Batch 2 pre-orders are open with £50 off. Units are limited.
